About Bouteloua eriopoda (Torr.) Torr.
Bouteloua eriopoda (Torr.) Torr., commonly called black grama, is a perennial prairie grass native to the Southwestern United States. Its primary method of reproduction is through stolons, because it naturally has a low ratio of viable seeds to sterile seeds. This difference between viable and sterile seed numbers may contribute to the species' lower tolerance to overgrazing compared to other grasses. Even so, Bouteloua eriopoda is good forage for livestock. It was first described in 1848 under the name Chondrosum eriopodum, from specimens collected along and near the Del Norte river in New Mexico. Within the United States, Bouteloua eriopoda can be found in the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming.
