About Bothriochloa glabra (Roxb.) A.Camus
Bothriochloa bladhii, which has several common names including Australian bluestem, Caucasian bluestem, forest-bluegrass, plains bluestem, and purple plume grass, is a Neotropic grass species in the family Poaceae. It is primarily found in tropical Africa, tropical and temperate Asia, and Australia. The type specimen of this species was collected from China by Finnish botanist Peter Johan Bladh, and the species specific epithet was chosen to honor Bladh. Its native distribution includes Africa from Senegal and Ethiopia southwards to South Africa, the Middle East, most of temperate and tropical southern and eastern Asia, Malesia, and Australia. Bothriochloa bladhii has additionally become naturalized in other parts of the neotropics. This grass is used as stored feed for local livestock, and is grazed by both livestock and wild ruminants. It is sometimes planted for revegetation to restore disturbed land.
