About Bossiaea ornata (Lindl.) Benth.
Bossiaea ornata (Lindl.) Benth. is a multi-stemmed shrub that usually grows up to 1.2 metres (3 feet 11 inches) tall, and may sometimes reach 2 metres (6 feet 7 inches) in height. Its leaves vary in shape, but are most commonly egg-shaped to oblong. They measure 16โ60 mm (0.63โ2.36 in) long and 5โ30 mm (0.20โ1.18 in) wide, and grow from a 1.5โ4 mm (0.059โ0.157 in) long petiole, with 2โ6 mm (0.079โ0.236 in) long stipules at the base. Flowers are arranged singly, in pairs, or in groups of three. Each flower sits on a 4โ11 mm (0.16โ0.43 in) long hairy pedicel, with up to thirteen overlapping bracts at the base of the pedicel. The five sepals are joined at the base to form a tube 2โ6 mm (0.079โ0.236 in) long, with sepal lobes 4.5โ9 mm (0.18โ0.35 in) long; the two upper lobes are slightly broader than the lower three. The standard petal is yellow or orange-yellow with a reddish-brown margin and base, and measures 12.5โ19 mm (0.49โ0.75 in) long. The wing petals are 11.3โ14.1 mm (0.44โ0.56 in) long, and the keel petal is red or reddish brown and 10.2โ13.2 mm (0.40โ0.52 in) long. Flowering of this species takes place from July to November. This bossiaea occurs in Western Australia, ranging between Avon Valley National Park, south to Augusta, and east to Albany. It grows in the Esperance Plains, Jarrah Forest, Swan Coastal Plain and Warren biogeographic regions, in the understorey of forest and woodland habitats.
