Bombus vagans Smith, 1854 is a common bumblebee species with a medium-length tongue. Its head, thorax, and first two abdominal segments are yellow, while the remaining abdominal segments are black. The face has a mix of yellow and black hairs. The thorax is densely covered in shaggy yellow hair, except for a smooth, bare, shiny central area. The first two abdominal segments have yellow hairs, and the rest of the abdomen is covered in black hairs. The bee's underside and legs are black. It can be confused with several similar species: the slightly smaller Bombus sandersoni, Bombus perplexus, Bombus impatiens, and Bombus affinis.
