The face has a mix of yellow and black hairs. The thorax is densely covered in shaggy yellow hair, except for a smooth, bare, shiny central area. The first two abdominal segments have yellow hairs, and the rest of the abdomen is covered in black hairs. The bee's underside and legs are black. It can be confused with several similar species: the slightly smaller Bombus sandersoni, Bombus perplexus, Bombus impatiens, and Bombus affinis.
