About Bombus mucidus Gerstäcker, 1869

Bombus mucidus is a species of bumblebee first formally described by Gerstäcker in 1869. It is native to southern Europe, where it lives only in high-altitude mountain habitats. Its local common name in the region is Grauweiße Hummel. This bumblebee can be found across multiple mountain ranges of southern Europe, including the Cordillera Cantábrica, the Pyrenees, the Alps, the Apennines, the Balkans, the Carpathians, and the Crna Gora Mountains. It prefers the warmer southern slopes of these mountains, where it makes its home in subalpine grassland. It feeds on a wide variety of plant species. Its distribution is fragmented, because it is restricted to isolated high mountain areas across its range. As cooler high mountain habitats shrink due to climate change, this species is at risk of population decline. It remains common in some parts of its current range.
