About Boloria thore (Hübner, 1803)

Boloria thore, commonly known as Thor's fritillary, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Nymphalidae. This species is found in damp habitats across the Alps, Fennoscandia, southern European Russia, the Urals, and extends eastward through the Palearctic region to Siberia and Japan. Its wingspan measures 28 to 34 millimeters. In the nymotypical form of Boloria thore, black is the dominant color on the upperside of the wings; this degree of black dominance is only seen in melanistic aberrations of other related species. Compared to all other species in the genus Argynnis, the ground color of this butterfly's underside is duller. The hindwing ranges in color from dark brick-red to cinnamon-brown, with only the median band being dark yellow. In the Alps, the species occurs at moderate elevations within the forest region, not above 6000 feet. It is also found in the high North, including Scandinavia and Finland. Overall, specimens from northern regions are paler than individuals from the Alps.
