About Bolboschoenus maritimus (L.) Palla
Bolboschoenus maritimus (L.) Palla is a flowering plant species belonging to the Cyperaceae family. Its common names are sea clubrush, cosmopolitan bulrush, alkali bulrush, saltmarsh bulrush, and bayonet grass. It grows in seaside wetland habitats across much of the world, and is widespread throughout most of temperate and subtropical Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and various islands. As a halophyte, B. maritimus typically occurs in saline habitats. Its documented locations include the northern coast of the North and Baltic Sea, Scandinavia, coastal western and southern Europe, inland northern Poland, Pannonia, and areas as far east as the Ural Mountains. B. maritimus often forms the dominant vegetation in areas with saline, mineral-rich muddy substrates that experience substantial water level fluctuations, and typically flood in spring and early summer. These habitats have gained economic importance and are now used intensively for livestock grazing. This intensive use has caused B. maritimus to disappear from parts of its historical range, a trend that is further worsened by land reclamation, invasive species, and conversion of habitat to arable land.
