About Billardiera macrantha Hook.fil.
Billardiera macrantha Hook.fil. is a slender twining vine with shiny brown stems. Adult leaves of this species are narrowly elliptic, measuring 24โ53 mm (0.94โ2.09 in) in length and 4โ8 mm (0.16โ0.31 in) in width, borne on a petiole 2โ5 mm (0.079โ0.197 in) long. Leaf edges curve slightly downwards; the upper leaf surface is glossy green, while the lower surface is paler. Flowers are borne singly on a thin, hanging peduncle that is 17โ33 mm (0.67โ1.30 in) long. Sepals vary in shape, most commonly from egg-shaped to needle-like, and are 3โ9 mm (0.12โ0.35 in) long. Petals are spatula-shaped, yellowish-green with dark blue tinges or spots along the edges, and measure 26โ38 mm (1.0โ1.5 in) long. The petal lobes spread outward but do not curve backwards. Flowering takes place from October to February. The mature fruit is a shiny purple, oval berry 18โ20 mm (0.71โ0.79 in) long that contains many seeds. This twining species grows in tall Nothofagus and eucalypt forest in moist sites at higher altitudes. It is found on the Northern and Southern Tablelands of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, on the Otways and mountain ranges east of Melbourne, in isolated locations further west in Victoria, and in Tasmania.
