About Berberis swaseyi Buckley ex M.J.Young

Berberis swaseyi, commonly called Texas barberry, is a rare barberry species that is endemic to the Edwards Plateau region of Texas. It grows on limestone ridges and in canyons. This evergreen species has thick, rigid compound leaves, each containing five to nine leaflets. Its berries range from dry to juicy in texture, and from white to red in color, with a diameter of approximately 9 to 16 millimeters. Because this species produces compound leaves, it is grouped with plants that are sometimes classified separately into the genus Mahonia.
