About Berberis julianae C.K.Schneid.
Berberis julianae, commonly known as wintergreen barberry or Chinese barberry, is a flowering evergreen shrub. It is native to Central China, specifically growing in the regions of Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, and Sichuan. This species is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant in other temperate regions around the world. It has been reported to be naturalized in scattered locations across the United States, including Mississippi, Alabama, North Carolina, and New York State.
Berberis julianae forms a dense bush that reaches a mature height of 3 metres. It has spiny, obovate leaves, and its dense growth habit makes it suitable for use as hedging. Its flowers are yellow with a red tinge, and they grow in clusters that can contain up to 25 individual flowers. The plant produces elliptical berries that are dark purple, appearing almost black, and covered in a characteristic white bloom; the berries reach up to 6 mm in length. This plant has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
