Bauhinia ungulata L. is a shrub species that can reach up to 7 meters in height. It is native to tropical Americas, growing across the region from Mexico to Paraguay. It is commonly found throughout the open Brazilian savannas of Cerrado and Pantanal. This species produces nocturnal flowers that are pollinated by phyllostomid bats. The primary pollinators are small Glossophaginae species Glossophaga soricina and Anoura caudifer, plus Phyllostominae species Phyllostomus discolor. These bats visit the flowers either singly or in pairs.
