About Barleria elegans S.Moore

Barleria elegans S.Moore has common names: white bushveld barleria in English, and wit bosviooltjie in Afrikaans. It is a plant species belonging to the family Acanthaceae. This species is a spiny perennial herb or subshrub. Its native range includes Angola, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, and the Northern Provinces and KwaZulu-Natal regions of South Africa. Two subspecies are currently accepted: Barleria elegans subsp. elegans, which is native to Angola and northwestern Namibia; and Barleria elegans subsp. orientalis I.Darbysh., which is native to Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, South Africa’s Northern Provinces, and KwaZulu-Natal.
