This spider can most often be found on the edges of deciduous forests, on broad-leaved bushes and trees (particularly oaks), and within grassy areas. It is widely distributed across Central Europe, and quite common across most of this region. The overall range of Ballus chalybeius extends from Europe, through North Africa, to Central Asia.
