About Axiocerses thyra almeida (Felder, 1862)

Aloeides thyra, commonly known as the red copper, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Lycaenidae. It is found in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Males of this species have a wingspan of 22–26 mm, while females have a slightly larger wingspan of 24–28 mm. Adult Aloeides thyra are active from July to April, with population peaks occurring in October and February. The species produces several generations per year throughout the warmer months. The larvae feed on three species of the genus Aspalathus: Aspalathus acuminata, Aspalathus laricifolia, and Aspalathus cymbiformis. The larvae are attended by ants of the species Lepisiota capensis.
