About Avenella flexuosa (L.) Drejer
Commonly called wavy hair-grass, Avenella flexuosa (L.) Drejer has wiry leaves and delicate, shaking panicles made up of silvery or purplish-brown flower heads borne on wavy, hair-like stalks. Its leaves grow in tight bunched tufts, and plants form a very tussocky, low sward. It reaches 5 to 20 cm in height before flowering, and grows up to 30 cm high overall. This species occurs naturally in dry grasslands, moors, and heaths, and it is also an important component of the ground flora in birch and oak woodlands. It prefers acidic, free-draining soil, and does not grow in chalk or limestone areas. It can survive at elevations over 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) above sea level.
