About Austrostipa elegantissima (Labill.) S.W.L.Jacobs & J.Everett

Austrostipa elegantissima, commonly called tall feather-grass, is a grass species belonging to the family Poaceae. It is native to southern Australia, ranging from Western Australia to New South Wales. This plant is a decumbent perennial that grows as a rhizomatous tussock with widespread leaves, and does not produce basal leaves. It occurs only in areas that are not grazed by introduced livestock, which feed on this grass. The species was first described by Jacques Labillardière in 1805 under the name Stipa elegantissima, and was reclassified into the genus Austrostipa in 1996. Red-eared firetails (Stagonopleura oculata) use this plant to build their nests.
