About Austrolestes annulosus (Selys, 1862)

Austrolestes annulosus (Selys, 1862) is a thin, medium-sized damselfly. Its abdomen measures 3 cm in length. This species can easily be confused with Coenagrion lyelli or Caliagrion billinghursti, but it can be told apart from these two species by its dorsal patterns. Its coloration varies based on individual maturity and environmental temperature; most individuals are a striking blue with very few black markings. Females are slightly more robust in build than males, and have a black and white or pale blue coloration. Austrolestes annulosus is widely distributed across most of Australia, excluding the northern and north-eastern regions of the country. It is active from September through April, and inhabits still water bodies including riverine pools, lakes, ponds, and temporary pools.
