Austroaeschna subapicalis, described by Theischinger in 1982, is a species of large dragonfly in the family Aeshnidae. It is commonly known by the common name conehead darner. This dragonfly lives in mountain streams located in New South Wales and Victoria, Australia. It is a very dark dragonfly with pale markings that are not distinct. It looks similar to the mountain darner, Austroaeschna atrata, a species that occurs in alpine areas of southern New South Wales and Victoria.
