About Asterocarpa humilis (Heller, 1878)

Asterocarpa humilis is a species of ascidian tunicate. It was first described in 1878 by Camill Heller under the original name Styela humilis. This is a sessile, subtropical species that occurs at depths up to 26 meters. Its recorded distribution includes the Indo-Pacific, the temperate seas of Australia, as well as waters around New Zealand, Chile, and South Africa. As a member of the class Ascidiacea, this species is hermaphroditic, and can undergo both cross-fertilization and self-fertilization. Its eggs develop into larvae, which then undergo metamorphosis to become benthic adult individuals.
