When it was originally formally described in 1753, it was classified as part of the genus Buphthalmum under the basionym Bupthalmum aquaticum. This original scientific name translates to "sweet-scented ox eye". This plant is a low-growing annual herb that produces orange-yellow flowers, and it is native to the Mediterranean region. It flowers between April and June, and grows in colonized dry coastal areas.
