About Astelia fragrans Colenso

Astelia fragrans, commonly called bush lily, bush flax, or kakaha, is the most widespread Astelia species native to New Zealand. It grows at altitudes ranging from sea level up to roughly 900 metres. This species produces long, sword-shaped green leaves, whose midribs may sometimes be red. Clusters of green flowers grow at the center of the plant, blooming between October and November. The plant develops yellow-orange fruit during the summer. It was first formally described by botanist William Colenso in 1883.
