About Asparagus densiflorus (Kunth) Jessop
Asparagus densiflorus (Kunth) Jessop is an evergreen perennial plant. It is one of several species colloquially called asparagus ferns, and it is not related to actual ferns. It also has the common names foxtail asparagus fern and plume fern. This species is variable, and is related to the cultivated edible asparagus. It is native to southern Africa, ranging from Mozambique to South Africa, and is widely cultivated globally.
Its native distribution includes the Cape Provinces, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Northern Provinces in South Africa, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), and the Inhaca Islands of Mozambique. This plant cannot tolerate frost, so it is usually grown under glass in temperate regions. Numerous cultivars have been developed for cultivation. The compact cultivar 'Meyersii' has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Its dense 50 cm (20 in) foliage plumes are especially valued for use in flower arranging.
