Asparagus cochinchinensis (Lour.) Merr. is distributed across eastern Asia, including the Philippines and Japan. Its scientific name refers to the southern region of Vietnam; in Vietnamese, this species is called thiên môn đông, a name that is similar to tian men dong (天門冬), its name in Chinese. This is a trailing plant that grows up to 2.5 meters in length. Its leaves take the form of phyllodes, measuring 15 to 25 millimeters long. The plant produces axillary flowers, and its white berries often grow in pairs. The roots and stems of Asparagus cochinchinensis are used in traditional Chinese and Korean medicine.
