About Asarum hartwegii S.Watson
Asarum hartwegii is a wild ginger species commonly known as Hartweg's wild ginger. This species is endemic to California, where it grows in forest habitat. It is a perennial herb that grows from a ginger-scented rhizome that extends vertically deep into the ground. It forms a clump of heart-shaped to round leaves with elaborate white veining, and the leaf surface is covered in curved hairs. Each leaf grows on a long petiole that can reach up to 21 centimeters in length. The plant produces a single solitary flower that sits close to the ground on a short peduncle. The flower has no petals, but it does have three curving, hairy sepals that are brownish or maroon; the inner surfaces of the sepals are whitish with red stripes. The fruit produced is a fleshy capsule that holds many seeds.
