About Artoriopsis expolita (L.Koch, 1877)

Artoriopsis expolita is a species of wolf spider native to southern Australia. It was first published in 1877 by Ludwig Koch, originally described under the name Lycosa expolita. Females of the species reach a body length of 9 millimeters (0.35 inches), while males are slightly smaller than females. This spider is common in open, moderately moist habitats. It is frequently encountered close to creeks and rivers, in coastal foredunes, on pasture land, and on suburban lawns. Most adult individuals of Artoriopsis expolita are encountered between the months of October and January. Females carry egg sacs between November and December, and carry newly hatched spiderlings on their bodies from December to January. The species is rarely spotted between March and August. Multiple reports document that this spider bites humans, with bites occasionally causing minor swelling and redness at the bite site.
