About Artemisiospiza nevadensis (Ridgway, 1874)
The sagebrush sparrow, with the scientific name Artemisiospiza nevadensis, is a medium-sized sparrow that lives in the western United States and northwestern Mexico. This species was originally classified in the genus Amphispiza, but research published in 2007 and 2009 provided evidence supporting its placement in its own separate genus. Sagebrush sparrows are most commonly associated with sagebrush habitats. They can also be found in brushy stands of saltbush, chamise, and other low shrubs growing in the arid interior western region of North America. This sparrow breeds in the interior of the Western United States, in the area between the Rocky Mountains and coastal mountain ranges like the Cascades. It spends the winter in United States states along the Mexican border, as well as in the northern parts of the Mexican states Sonora and Chihuahua. The habitat used by sagebrush sparrows is frequently threatened by two processes: woody plant encroachment, and the invasion of non-native or expanding herbaceous plants.
