About Artemisia gmelinii var. messerschmidiana (Besser) Poljakov
This taxon is a variety of Artemisia gmelinii, a perennial shrub that can reach up to 150 cm (4.9 ft) in height. Its leaves are thick, elliptic, and bipinnately dissected. The plant produces spherical inflorescences that are densely arranged. It is native to China, Russia, Japan, and other areas of central Asia, and it grows in a wide range of habitats including hills, meadows, roadsides, slopes, and forest steppes. Artemisia gmelinii contains veratric acid, flavonoids, sesquiterpenes, other bioactive constituents, and 1% essential oil by content. In Korea, the leaves and stems of the plant are used to treat hepatitis, hyperlipemia, and infected cholecystitis. Dried parts of this plant are also used in traditional Chinese medicine.
