About Aristolochiaceae
Aristolochiaceae are mostly perennial plants that can be herbaceous plants, shrubs, or lianas. Their simple leaves are membranous and cordate, arranged alternately along the stem on petioles, and are spread out. Leaf margins are typically entire, and no stipules are present. Flowers are medium to large in size, grow in leaf axils, and can be either bilaterally symmetrical or radially symmetrical. In ecology, pipevine swallowtail butterflies lay their eggs on Aristolochia species (pipevines). Larvae feed on these plants and are not affected by the plant's toxin; this toxin then provides protection against predators for the adult butterflies.
