About Aristolochia pistolochia L.

Aristolochia pistolochia L. (commonly confused with Aristolochia paucinervis) is a perennial geophyte. It has a rhizome made up of numerous cylindrical tubers. Its leaves are ovate-triangular, with a cartilaginous margin that ranges from sharp to marginalized, a glaucous underside, and very prominent nerves. Its flowers are yellow on the outside and dark reddish or green on the inside. Unlike Aristolochia paucinervis, Aristolochia pistolochia can be easily identified by its thick, jagged leaf border. This species is distributed across southwestern Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain), southern France, Corsica, and Sardinia. It grows in bush clearings, heaths, holm oak groves, fallow lands, and rocky areas at basal and montane elevations.
