About Arigomphus cornutus (Tough, 1900)
The horned clubtail, known scientifically as Arigomphus cornutus, is a clubtail dragonfly native to Canada and the United States. This species reaches a total length of 2.2 inches (56 mm), and unlike typical clubtails, it does not have an enlarged abdominal club. Its thorax is greenish and marked with black stripes, while its abdomen is black with a light stripe running along its dorsal top. It has blue eyes and black legs. Distinctive features of this dragonfly include wide, forked yellow claspers shaped like cow horns, plus a large sloped bridge between its eyes. The horned clubtail inhabits ponds and slow-moving, sluggish streams. Its known range covers Canada and specific U.S. states and regions: In Montana, it is found only in artificial reservoirs across Carter, Custer, Fallon, Powder River, and Wibaux Counties; it also occurs in Cherry and Cuming Counties in Nebraska, it is rarely found in New York, and it has been recorded in Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
