About Argiocnemis rubescens Selys, 1877

Argiocnemis rubescens is a species of damselfly in the family Coenagrionidae, commonly called the red-tipped shadefly. It is a widespread species, with a range extending from India to southern China, through south-east Asia, to New Guinea and Australia. This damselfly prefers fresh still water habitats including pools, marshes, and swamps. Adult Argiocnemis rubescens are small to medium-sized, measuring 35 to 40 millimeters in total length, with hindwings that are less than 22 millimeters long. Immature individuals are pale reddish brown. Mature males are dark, with pale green stripes on the thorax and red coloration on abdominal segments 8 and 9. In Australia, the species is found in suitable habitats from Shark Bay in the west, across the northern part of the continent, to approximately Point Hicks in the south-east. This taxon is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
