The variable dancer, with the scientific name Argia fumipennis (Burmeister, 1839), is a damselfly that belongs to the family Coenagrionidae. This species is native to North America. It is widespread across the eastern portion of the continent, and also occurs in the interior western United States. Males of the subspecies A. f. violacea, commonly called the violet dancer, are purple with a blue-tipped abdomen.
