About Arctostaphylos pacifica Roof

Arctostaphylos pacifica is a short manzanita species that forms burls. It grows in mats on sandstone outcrops of San Bruno Mountain at an elevation of 300 meters. Fully grown specimens reach heights between 10 and 60 cm. Unlike most other manzanitas, which have red-hued bark, this species has unusual light brown bark. Its serrate, pastel green leaves densely fill its branches. The species reproduces clonally using ligno-tubers. This trait allowed Arctostaphylos pacifica to survive the 1964 Devil's Arroyo fire that burned San Bruno Mountain, enabling plants to resprout from their reproductive burls.
