It is sometimes referred to as the pumpkin spider, though this common name is also used for a separate species, Araneus marmoreus. It is an orb-weaver spider that is native to Europe and was introduced to North America. A. diadematus has a holarctic distribution, found throughout Europe and across North America, ranging from southern Canada to Mexico, and from British Columbia to Newfoundland.
