About Aramides saracura (Spix, 1825)
The slaty-breasted wood rail, with the scientific name Aramides saracura (Spix, 1825), measures 34 to 37 cm (13 to 15 in) in length; one recorded male weighed 540 g (19 oz). Males and females have identical plumage and features. Adult slaty-breasted wood rails have a green bill with a bluish base, a red eye, and legs and feet that range in color from reddish brown to yellowish brown. Most of the head, along with the throat, breast, and belly, is slate gray. Their nape and shoulders are chestnut, their back is olive, and their tail is black. Immature and juvenile plumage and features of this species have not been formally described. The slaty-breasted wood rail is distributed across southeastern Brazil, ranging south and west from southern Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo into eastern Paraguay and northeastern Argentina. It typically lives in moderately wet forest and woodland, most often in swampy areas or alongside streams, and generally avoids open marshes.
