About Arachis pintoi Krapov. & W.C.Greg.

Pinto peanut, formally Arachis pintoi Krapov. & W.C.Greg., is a stoloniferous perennial creeping legume. It grows to a height of 20 to 50 cm and forms dense swards. It has a prominent taproot, plus many secondary nodulated roots. Stems are prostrate when young, then become ascendant. Leaves are tetrafoliolate. Leaflets range in shape from oblong-obovate to obovate, measuring 4.5 cm long by 3.5 cm broad. The upper surface of leaflets is glabrous and darker green, while the lower surface is covered in fine hairs. Flowers are yellow, borne on short axillary racemes, and closely resemble groundnut flowers but are smaller. Just like groundnut, after pollination, the flower stalks elongate and grow downward into the soil, reaching depths of up to about 7 cm. The fruit is a one-seeded pod that forms terminally underground. It measures 1 to 1.5 cm long and 6 to 8 mm in diameter, and forms in the upper 10 cm of soil.
