About Aporophyla nigra Haworth, 1809

Aporophyla nigra Haworth, 1809 has a wingspan ranging from 40 to 48 mm. Its forewings are deep black; the outer area beyond the outer line often appears brown. The inner and outer lines, plus the edges of the stigmata, are an even deeper black. The outer edge of the reniform stigma is marked with yellowish spots. The subterminal line is only rarely visible. Male hindwings are white, and sometimes the veins and termen are clouded with fuscous. Female hindwings are smoky grey brown, and become more whitish towards the base. The aberration ab. seileri Fuchs refers to the more intensely black forms of this species that have no trace of brown colouration.
