Technical description and variation: The forewing is fuscous brown with a purplish grey gloss, and this gloss is more pronounced in females. Males vary in color from dark to pale rufous brown. Wing lines and markings are obscure, and the median area is often darker. In males, the hindwing is white with a dark terminal line; in females, the hindwing is uniformly brownish.
The form ab. tripuncta Frr. (30 b) is a very distinct dull brown and iron-grey form. It has a whitish outer edge to the reniform spot, and it is slightly smaller than the typical form of the species. The forewings measure 15–18 mm in length.
The caterpillar is green, and the first three segments are sometimes tinged with pink. It has three brownish broken lines running along its back, and a violet-edged white line running along the spiracles.
