About Apodanthera undulata A.Gray

Apodanthera undulata, commonly called melon loco, is a plant species in the genus Apodanthera. It is native to the southwestern United States, where it occurs in western Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, and extends through Mexico as far south as Oaxaca. This species is a monoecious, foul-smelling perennial vine that grows from a very large taproot, which can reach up to 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter. Its stems grow prostrate along the ground, reaching lengths up to 2.4 m (8 feet), and sometimes the vine climbs using tendrils. The leaves are round to kidney-shaped, can grow up to 15 cm (6 inches) across, and have distinctly wavy edges. Apodanthera undulata produces yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers. Its fruits are egg-shaped, have lengthwise ridges, and grow up to 10 cm (4 inches) long.
