About Apantesis arge
Apantesis arge, commonly known as the arge moth or arge tiger moth, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. This species was first formally described by Dru Drury in 1773. It is distributed across North America, ranging from Quebec and Maine in the northeast, south to Florida, west to New Mexico, and north to North Dakota and Ontario. The wingspan of adult Apantesis arge measures between 38 and 50 millimetres, which equals 1.5 to 2.0 inches. Across most of the species' range, adult moths are active from April to September; in Quebec, they are active only from July to September. Southern populations of this moth produce two generations per year, while northern populations produce one or two generations per year. The caterpillar larvae of Apantesis arge feed on the leaves of corn, dock, lambs-quarter, Chenopodium, grape, plantain, Opuntia, smartweed, and sunflower. This species was previously classified in the genus Grammia, but was moved to the genus Apantesis, along with all other species originally from the genera Grammia, Holarctia, and Notarctia.
