About Apamea rubrirena (Treitschke, 1825)
Apamea rubrirena has a wingspan of 40–51 mm. This moth species is extraordinarily variable in color, wing shape, and size. Individuals usually have black-brown heads and thoraxes, with some white hairs and a metathoracic rufous crest. The base forewing color ranges from pale orange to reddish brown or blackish brown, marked with rufous reniform patches and either indistinct or whitish wavy transverse lines. Hindwings are uniform light gray-brown, with clearly visible veins. Tarsi are black with whitish rings. This species is distributed across northern and western Europe, extending east through Russia and Asia to Japan and Korea. It also occurs on the Kuril Islands and the Aleutian Islands, and was first reported in Alaska in 1989. These moths inhabit montane to subalpine coniferous forests, up to an elevation of 2,400 metres (7,900 ft) above sea level. In Europe, they are found especially in the Alps and lower mountains, while in Russia they occur in the taiga.
