The wingspan of adult Apamea illyria ranges from 31 to 36 mm. Adult moths are active and in flight from May to July each year. The larvae of this moth feed on grass species from the genera Calamagrostis, Dactylis, and Deschampsia, as well as the species Milium effusum.
