It is native to North Africa, as well as southern and western Europe, with its native range extending as far north as the Netherlands. It has been introduced to other regions around the world, including northern Europe and North America. Occasionally, it grows as a minor weed in agricultural fields. This plant is an annual grass that forms small tufts, reaching a maximum height of approximately 30 centimetres, or 12 inches. Its leaves are short, pointed, and have a somewhat hairy texture. Its inflorescence can grow up to 3 centimetres (1.2 inches) long and 1 centimetre (0.4 inches) wide. It is flat, hairy, and holds spikelets that are only a few millimeters long.
