This species was first formally described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1775. It is distributed across many regions of the world, including China, Hawaii, São Tomé and Príncipe, the Society Islands, Thailand, New Zealand, and Australia – specifically within the Australian territories of New South Wales, Norfolk Island, Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia. A subspecies, Anomis flava fimbriago, occurs in North America. The adult wingspan of this moth measures approximately 28 mm.
