About Anisognathus somptuosus (R.Lesson, 1831)

The blue-winged mountain tanager, scientifically named Anisognathus somptuosus, is a bird species that belongs to the tanager family Thraupidae. This species inhabits highland forest and woodland in the Andes of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela, and also has a separate disjunct population located in the Venezuelan Coastal Range. It is a common species, and its overall populations are currently considered stable. Most individuals are generally bright yellow and black, with blue colouration on the wings and tail; some populations have a moss-green back. The population found in Bolivia and the southernmost part of Peru has a blue rump and a very distinct voice. This population is sometimes recognized as a separate species called the Bolivian mountain tanager, with the scientific name A. flavinucha.
