About Anisognathus lacrymosus (Du Bus de Gisignies, 1846)

The lacrimose mountain tanager, with the scientific name Anisognathus lacrymosus, is a bird species that belongs to the tanager family Thraupidae. It inhabits Andean highland forests, ranging from Venezuela through Colombia and Ecuador all the way to Peru. This species has 11 recognized subspecies, several of which are quite distinct from one another. One subspecies, A. l. yariguierum, was only formally described for scientific study in 2010. The common name 'lacrimose', which means crying, refers to the yellow patch located below the bird's eye that resembles a tear.
