About Angerona prunaria (Linnaeus, 1758)

Angerona prunaria (Linnaeus, 1758) is a relatively large, prominent member of the geometer moth family. This species reaches a wingspan of 35–45 mm, and rarely grows up to 56 mm. Following the pattern seen in most Lepidoptera, males are usually slightly smaller than females. The moth's base wing colour ranges from red to orange or yellow. Females have fine grey to almost black cross stippling and a transverse vein spot. Both sexes have dark spots on their wing fringes. Angerona prunaria is a highly variable species. Males are brighter in colour than females; both sexes can occur in the plain orange typical form, and in the form f. corylaria, which has an orange band on a dark brown base wing colour.
