About Anemone lancifolia Pursh

Anemonoides lancifolia, formerly classified as Anemone lancifolia Pursh, is commonly called lanceleaf anemone or mountain thimbleweed. It is an herbaceous plant species belonging to the buttercup family Ranunculaceae. This species is native to the eastern United States, specifically found in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and West Virginia, within the broader region of the Southeastern United States. It typically grows in rich, damp woodland soils. Plants grow 20 to 30 cm tall from a horizontally oriented rhizome, and flower from mid-spring to early summer. Its flowers have white sepals that measure 12–20 mm in length. This species strongly resembles Anemonoides quinquefolia, and was formerly treated as a subspecies of A. quinquefolia, but differs by growing to a larger size. Both the scientific and common names of the species refer to its leaf shape: it has narrower leaflets with distinctive serration, compared to the leaflets of A. quinquefolia. After flowering, it produces dry fruit called achenes, which form in a small cluster. Each achene is 3.5–5 mm long, lacks wings, and bears a straight or partially curved beak that is 1–1.5 mm long.
