About Androsace nivalis (Lindl.) Wendelbo

Androsace nivalis (Lindl.) Wendelbo grows as low clumps that can expand into extended mats. It produces small rosettes of leaves; leaves are broadly lanceolate to linear, with toothed margins that are sometimes entire. Both leaf surfaces and flower stems are covered in short stellate or branched hairs. Flower stems grow from leaf axils and develop small terminal flower clusters, which are held well above the mat-like foliage. The showy flowers have five pinkish purple petals, usually with a darker purple throat. This species is endemic to the Wenatchee Mountains in Washington state and nearby surrounding areas. It grows in open forest, dry rocky slopes, and meadows, ranging from around 600 m elevation up to the alpine zone, and it often grows on rocky serpentine soils.
