About Ancistrocerus nigricornis (Curtis, 1826)
Ancistrocerus nigricornis (Curtis, 1826) exhibits sexual dimorphism in body size: males reach 6–10 millimetres (0.24–0.39 inches) in length, while females reach 9–13 millimetres (0.35–0.51 inches). These are medium-sized solitary wasps with a yellow and black coloration. They have brown hairs covering the thorax, small spots at the base of the front wings, and a wing stigma. Apical bands are present on the third and fourth metasomal terga. Females lack the spot that would otherwise sit between the antennal socket and the eye. This species is distributed across most of Europe, the eastern Palearctic realm, the Near East, North Africa, and the Oriental realm. These potter wasps inhabit wet meadows and open landscapes, and can sometimes be found in gardens; they occupy areas that provide their required feeding resources and preferred nesting sites.
